Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is a requirement under BS 5266-1:2016 for all UK business premises, ranging from offices to hotels, nightclubs, hospitals, museums, and multi-storey dwellings.  It should also provide enough illumination to stop any potentially dangerous tasks safely before evacuating. This type of lighting is a requirement of the Regulatory (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and is part of the fire safety provision required for a building. Let us explain the different types of emergency lighting:

  • Escape route lighting – will show any building occupants the way to the emergency exit, so they can safely leave the building. It should be bright enough to avoid any hazards along the way, and exit points are apparent to those in a high-pressure situation. It includes brightly illuminated fire exit signs and emergency bulkhead lights.
  • Open area lighting – this lighting comes on in larger spaces so that the building occupants can find their way to the emergency escape route and the nearest exit.
  • High-risk task area lighting – when working in an industry such as manufacturing, there is a high probability that specific processes and machinery would pose a risk if operated in the dark or left unattended during evacuation. BS 5266-1 emergency lighting should act in these areas so that the task or process halts safely and all staff can evacuate the premises safely.

Our experienced commercial electricians conduct emergency lighting installation, testing, maintenance, and repair. We ensure that each light is identified with a location identity for record-keeping purposes, and we keep logs of system tests, defects, and remedial action for each light. We ensure compliance with these requirements and can work around you and your business, conducting this service at a time to suit you.
